Sorrento

May 10th and 11th
Sorrento
The drive from Assisi to Sorrento was really very beautiful.  They say that the countryside of Sorrento is the very essence of southern Italy.  Tortuous roads wind their way through  hills covered in olive trees and lemon groves passing through sleepy villages and tiny fishing ports.  The views are stunning at every angle.
We head straight out to the Amalfi coast which stretches for some 50 kms along the southern side of the Sorrento Penninsula.  It has cliffs terraced with lemon groves sheer drops down to sparkling beautiful blue seas.  There are villas that cling precariously to the slopes of the cliffs.  This is in an earthquake zone but still they build on these sheer cliffs, amazing.  The loveliest of the villages that we stopped at was Positano.

Lee at Positano
It has steeply stacked houses that are a myriad of peaches, pinks and terracotta’s, and its near verticle streets, which are in fact stair cases are lined with very expensive shops. We had a wander around and visited the church which was really very nice and went and dipped our feet into the Mediterranean sea and then walked around taking a few snaps.  We were amazed that they are permitted to build such places in an earthquake zone, but you know the Italians.  But what amazes me more is some of these women’s capacity for shopping, it is incredible.  I get bored with shopping after about 30 minutes maximum, these women can do it for hours.  I remind Himself 50 times a day what a lucky lucky man he is!!  I think he is even starting to believe it now.  Brainwashed perhaps!  But I thought our Anna could shop like nobody else but, she is a vey amateur compared to these ladies.
Sorrento is very laid back and its location is beautiful straddling cliffs that look directly over the bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius.  Our hotel room has a balcony that hangs directly over the cliffs.  Mamma Mia!!  The sun streams straight on to our balcony and it is fantastic.  Great for drying the washing also!!  We use Sorrento mainly as a base for our other outings.  The Sorrento men are very cheeky!

Last evening we headed out for a lovely dinner at a real family run restaurant, and it was great.  Three generations of Italians cooking, very beautiful food.  Of course it was another all you can drink affair.  Himself once again makes the most of the opportunity, I was doing very well until they brought out the Limón cello, well Mamma Mia I just can’t resist it, no one else at our table seemed to like it, which I was very pleased about as I had their share also.   On the way back we were all very nicely primed and sang all the way back to Sorrento.

Today we have had a day on the Isle of Capri which is a stark mass of limestone rock that rises sheerly through the beautiful blue water situated in the Mediterranean sea.  Of course the Isle of Capri is very tourist orientated and really it’s a place for the rich and famous as it is really quiet expensive. We did the must see’s on the island and saw the blue cave.  The island of Capri is only a short 20 minute boat ride from Sorrento and is only 6km long, there is a steady stream of ferries streaming across to the island all day long.    We had a lovely small boat ride around the island which was lovely, but no more so than Hanlong Bay in Vietnam.  We then took a funicular ride up to Capri town and had a look around, we took a lovely walk down behind the garden down a long zig zag path to where there are some very flash hotels build.  We then came back to Sorrento and had a lovely lunch at a farm in Sorrento and watched the mozzarella being made by mamma and it was really very delicious, of course with all you can drink, so we came back for a siesta.  My goodness it is going to be so hard to come back home and go to work.   This is so nice and very very relaxing and so hard to take.
